Sara-sorenson LCMHC

Sara has a Bachelor’s in Anthropology and a Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling. She is a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC), trained in EMDR, CBT, TF-CBT, DBT, ACT, and Art Therapy.

Cheryl Kehl, LCSW
Cheryl has worked in mental health and addiction treatment since 1991, serving as a clinician, clinical director, program founder, and administrator. In 1998, she co-founded Second Nature Wilderness Program for adolescents after identifying gaps in existing outdoor therapy models. Her goal was to create a safer, more clinically sound approach that expanded access for a broader adolescent population and gave parents greater confidence in wilderness-based care.

Those years of experience, combined with her own time in treatment, directly shaped Corner Canyon. Having experienced residential care firsthand, Cheryl understood what made treatment effective, what got in the way of clinical growth, and what it took for clients to feel genuinely safe and cared for. Corner Canyon’s emphasis on comprehensive assessment, advanced clinical practices, and innovative technology reflects that foundation.

Cheryl holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Sociology and a Master of Social Work degree, both from Brigham Young University. Outside of work, she is the oldest of ten children, a mother of three, and a grandmother of six, which she will tell you is her favorite role of all.

FAQ & Answers

How is Corner Canyon different from traditional mental health treatment centers? collapse

Corner Canyon provides highly individualized, medically advanced mental health care in a private, luxury setting. Treatment may include innovative interventions such as ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) for trauma, genetic testing, and neuro-informed psychiatry — alongside evidence-based therapy. We specialize in complex, treatment-resistant conditions rather than one-size-fits-all programming.

Do you provide LGBTQIA+ affirming care? expand

Yes. Corner Canyon is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and affirming environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Our clinicians are trained in identity-affirming, trauma-informed care, and treatment plans are built with cultural sensitivity, clinical integrity, and respect for each patient’s lived experience.

What conditions do you treat? expand

We treat a wide range of primary mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, complex trauma, bipolar spectrum disorders, OCD, neurodivergent conditions, personality disorders, gender dysphoria, and suicidal ideation. We also treat co-occurring substance use when clinically appropriate.

What advanced or innovative treatments are available? expand

You will not be on your own. Alta Mira’s alumni program includes weekly support groups, quarterly tune-ups, and continuing care coordination. The goal is to sustain progress, reinforce insight, and maintain connection well beyond residential treatment.

What advanced or innovative treatments are available? expand

Depending on clinical eligibility, Corner Canyon may offer ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) for PTSD, neurofeedback, genetic testing (including MTHFR variants), nutritional psychiatry, and integrative somatic and experiential therapies. All interventions are overseen by licensed medical and psychiatric professionals.

What levels of care do you offer? expand

Corner Canyon offers a full continuum of mental health treatment, including residential care, inpatient support, partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient programming (IOP). Placement is determined through a comprehensive clinical assessment to ensure the appropriate level of support.

Is treatment private and confidential? expand

Days at Alta Mira are structured yet balanced. Mornings often begin with intention-setting, breakfast, and holistic practices. Afternoons include individual therapy, group sessions, and clinical work, with space for rest and reflection. Evenings are calmer, with dinner, peer support, and personal time. Weekends offer more expansive leisure and experiential activities to integrate the week’s work.

Does insurance cover treatment at Corner Canyon? expand

We accept many major insurance plans and frequently work with single case agreements. While we do not accept Medicare or Medicaid, our admissions team will help verify benefits, explain coverage, and support reimbursement whenever possible.

How do I know if Corner Canyon is the right fit for me or my loved one? expand

The best first step is to speak with our admissions team. We’ll listen carefully, answer your questions honestly, and help determine whether Corner Canyon’s clinical approach aligns with your needs — even if that means recommending a different level of care.

FAQ & Answers

What makes Corner Canyon "affirming" rather than just LGBTQ-friendly?

“Friendly” is a position. Affirming is a practice. It means our clinicians are trained to understand how minority stress and identity-based experiences affect mental health, that you can reside with others of your identified gender identity, that your name and pronouns are used without question, and that your identity is never treated as something to fix. You won’t have to educate or defend yourself to get care here.

No. Our team already understands, and the work of explaining or defending who you are isn’t yours to do here. We meet you where you are, without judgment, so your energy goes toward healing.
