Entering an inpatient alcohol treatment center is a powerful yet challenging first step in overcoming alcohol addiction. Entering treatment is usually not easy for a variety of reasons. One aspect that is especially difficult is withdrawal. This is the first step to sobriety. Withdrawal or detox is when the toxins from alcohol abuse are eliminated from the body. Detox can be uncomfortable, painful, and even deadly. These symptoms can be so painful and uncomfortable that the individual uses alcohol just to get relief. Recovery from alcohol addiction is possible but takes time, patience, and a lot of hard work. This is where an alcohol recovery program can be beneficial. So, how can a treatment center help you through withdrawal?

Deciding to Enter An Alcohol Recovery Program

Alcohol Use Disorder (or alcohol addiction) affects 15.1 million adults in the United States, which makes alcohol abuse a very common problem. However, how do you know when it’s time to seek help? There are telling symptoms and signs to look for when determining if your alcohol use has become a problem. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Becoming upset about not having access to alcohol
  • Partaking in risky behavior, such as driving under the influence
  • Impaired thinking and memories
  • Having the desire to stop drinking, but unable to do so
  • Secretive behavior, particularly about the extent of the alcohol abuse
  • Overall poor condition

Recognizing and acknowledging these symptoms is the first step in deciding when to seek outside help. Once that has been decided, it’s important to understand what the next step will look like. Withdrawal or detox can begin as soon as two hours after the last drink and can continue for days or weeks depending on the severity. To make this transition easier, it’s helpful to understand what withdrawal looks like.

Symptoms of Withdrawal

Over time, a person builds a tolerance to the alcohol consumed, so he or she needs to increase the amount of alcohol to achieve the initial pleasurable effects. As the person drinks more, his or her tolerance level increases. Heavy alcohol consumption can lead to liver damage, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, brain damage, or early death. Once addiction has set in, getting alcohol out of your system is more difficult. This is the process of detox or withdrawal. As mentioned above, this is when the toxins that result from substance abuse leave the body. Symptoms of withdrawal include:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Sweats
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Muscle aches
  • Mood swings
  • Dehydration
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Shakiness
  • Nausea and vomiting

These symptoms are most intense in the first few days, but the physical side effects typically start tapering off within a week. However, the length of time for this process depends on the level and duration of alcohol use.
