Therapy is a cornerstone of mental health recovery. The programs at Corner Canyon Health Centers use multiple therapeutic modalities to help clients manage symptoms and rebuild their lives. Psychotherapy is the most common form of therapy used to treat mental health issues. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), “Psychotherapy can be used as an alternative to or alongside medication and other treatment options.” We use innovative treatments, including psychotherapy, nutritional psychiatry, and other therapeutic tools, to guide clients through the healing process.

What Is Therapy?

Therapy is a treatment used to address unhealthy thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs. Individuals diagnosed with mental health disorders often benefit from attending individual and group therapy sessions. During sessions, clients and therapists discuss topics related to mental health, treatment, and aspects of their everyday lives. Therapy provides clients with an outside, objective perspective and increases self-awareness. A therapist helps clients process their emotions and develop skills to manage their condition.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), “People with mental illness can have symptoms that include a range of feelings, emotions, or experiences, including:

  • Shifts in mood
  • Sadness
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Low energy
  • Delusions
  • Hallucinations
  • Sleep problems

Many forms of therapy are available to treat the symptoms clients experience. Each form of therapy has different approaches and expected outcomes. We use evidence-based and alternative holistic therapies to help clients better understand their condition and build healthy routines to support positive lifestyle changes.

The Benefits of Combining Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

Psychiatry and psychotherapy play essential roles in mental health treatment. According to the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine, “While psychologists focus largely on the study of how dysregulation of mental processes and behaviors lead to pathology, it is the objective of the psychiatrist to medically treat these disorders.” Corner Canyon Health Centers offers psychiatric and psychological therapy services. Psychiatric therapies address biological factors contributing to mental health issues, while psychological therapies help clients develop essential skills for navigating treatment and managing symptoms. Combining these methods of treatment ensures a whole-person approach to care.

Trauma-Informed Care at Corner Canyon Health Centers

Trauma is a common cause of mental health issues. Many of the therapies we use help clients recover from traumatic events. According to SAMHSA, “Research has shown that traumatic experiences are associated with both behavioral health and chronic physical health conditions, especially those traumatic events that occur during childhood.” We use trauma-informed care and trauma-focused therapies to help clients reprocess past events in a safe and healthy way.

Some of the benefits of trauma-informed therapy include:

  • Reduced risk of retraumatization
  • Improved trust between clients and the care team
  • Increased client self-confidence and self-esteem

Clients and their families benefit from being part of a trauma-informed treatment program. We help clients build essential skills to manage their condition while educating families on the realities of mental health issues. Ensuring everyone is on the same page and feeling comfortable and safe during treatment reduces stress and increases the effectiveness of therapy.

Types of Psychotherapy

Everyone responds to mental health disorders and treatment differently. Multiple therapy methods are available to ensure each client can access the support they need to heal. Often, the clinical team works with clients to create a tailored blend of different therapies to address the client’s unique circumstances, needs, and preferences.

Many forms of psychotherapy are available to help people learn essential coping skills to manage their mental health. Some of the most common therapies include:

  • Psychodynamic psychotherapy
  • Psychoanalysis
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Interpersonal psychotherapy
  • Group therapy
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Family therapy
  • Person-centered therapy

We provide guidance, education, and support to clients while allowing them to remain in control of their own healing journey.

Healthier clients gain more from therapy sessions and have better outcomes.
