Members of the LGBTQAI+ community often face additional challenges such as harassment, violence, social shame, and discrimination for their sexual preferences or gender identity. These stressors can put members of this community at a greater risk of developing mental health issues.

Understanding Gender Dysphoria

Gender dysphoria is a term used to describe the distress experienced by individuals who feel a mismatch between their assigned sex at birth and their gender identity. This condition can lead to emotional, social, interpersonal and psychological distress, manifesting in a number of ways, including: 

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Social withdrawal
  • Difficulty functioning in everyday activities
  • Substance abuse 
  • Self-harm behaviors or suicidal ideation

Compassionate Gender Dysphoria Treatment

LGBTQ Residential Treatment

Our residential treatment center for mental health provides 24-hour care for individuals who struggle with gender dysphoria. Individuals can choose the gendered floor they are on and staff is trained to respect identified pronouns. 

Addressing Trauma

Many members in the LGBTQIA+ community may have experienced trauma related to their gender identity. Corner Canyon programs provide a safe and empathetic environment to help address these issues and heal from past trauma through trauma-informed therapies such as EMDR, Accelerated Resolution and Trauma-Focused CBT.

Gender-Affirming Care

Our intensive outpatient program provides gender-affirming therapy to support the mental health of individuals struggling with gender dysphoria. Outpatient program provides flexibility so clients can continue their daily routines such as work or school.

Peer Support

Corner Canyons’ peer support programs and group therapy sessions provide an opportunity for clients with gender dysphoria to connect with others who have shared experiences. This can help reduce feelings of isolation and build a sense of community.

Gender Dysphoria FAQ

Gender dysphoria causes feelings that there is a mismatch between one´s assigned sex at birth and their gender identity. It can cause feelings of anxiety, tension and uneasiness that can impact one’s daily life. 

The stress that comes with gender dysphoria can be overcome with psychological treatment, acceptance and ongoing support. In some cases individuals may start hormonal therapy in order to transition to the gender they feel most aligned with. 

The distress one feels from living with gender dysphoria can lead to a number of other mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders and substance abuse.

We are specifically formulated to offer personalized therapeutic interventions to adult individuals with mental health disorders.

We provide a comprehensive Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that offers clients the opportunity to attend group therapy sessions three to five times a week.

Liz is originally from lush green Washington State. She is a life enthusiast and a huge fan of people. Liz has always loved learning why people are the way they are. She moved to UT in 2013 and completed her bachelors degree in Psychology in 2016. After college Liz worked at a residential treatment center and found that she was not only passionate about people, but also administration. Liz is recently finished her MPA in April 2022. Liz loves serving people and is excited and looking forward to learning about; and from our clients here at Corner Canyon.
When Liz is not busy working she love being outdoors, eating ice cream, taking naps, and spending time with her precious baby girl and sweet husband.
